About Makkah's Climate
Makkah lies in a rocky valley surrounded by low hills in western Saudi Arabia, and it is one of the hottest year-round cities in the Kingdom. Daily averages stay elevated even in winter, and from May through September afternoon highs regularly exceed 43°C (109°F), with overnight lows struggling to fall below 30°C at the peak of summer. Humidity is moderate — lower than Jeddah but high enough to make exertion tiring, especially on the open plains between the holy sites. Rain is rare and scattered, mostly falling in autumn and winter, with yearly totals under about 110 mm; when it does come, the valley terrain can turn modest showers into brief flash floods. The most heat-tolerant window for Umrah is December through February. Practical tip: in summer, carry a parasol and an extra water bottle for any movement outside the Grand Mosque, and check prayer times via the Umm al-Qura calendar.
