About Hail's Climate
Hail is one of northern Saudi Arabia's main cities, set around 1,000 metres elevation in a cradle of the Aja and Salma mountain ranges, giving it a desert climate with genuinely cold winters. Summers are hot but less punishing than in Riyadh or the Eastern Province: July and August daytime temperatures typically sit between 38°C and 42°C (100–108°F), and the altitude allows a noticeable drop after sunset. Winters are cold to sharply cold; January averages fall between roughly 4°C and 16°C, surrounding desert regularly dips below freezing at night, and the region has on exceptional occasions recorded lows near minus ten. Rain is scarce but not unusual in winter and spring, occasionally mixed with hail. Dust storms are common in spring. The best window for exploring Aja, Salma, and the Nafud protected areas is October through April. Practical tip: don't camp exposed in January without proper winter gear, and check NCM advisories before setting out into the Nafud in spring.
