About Abha's Climate

Abha is the capital of the Asir region and sits at about 2,270 metres (7,450 ft) — altitude that makes it the coolest major city in Saudi Arabia by a wide margin. Summers are the opposite of what most visitors expect from the Kingdom: June and July daytime temperatures typically run 20–28°C (68–82°F), and evenings turn genuinely cool. January averages drop to about 12°C, with surrounding peaks occasionally touching near-freezing lows. Abha also collects far more rain than the rest of the country — roughly 280 mm a year, arriving in two waves: a main spring season between February and April, and a smaller monsoon-influenced burst in July and August with mountain thunderstorms. Morning fog curling through the hills is almost a daily occurrence in the rainy months. The most enjoyable window for parks, cable cars and Souda hikes runs March through October. Practical tip: pack a light jacket even in midsummer — evenings can feel chilly — and plan road trips around the thick morning mist during the rainy season.
